How is this data produced?

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) is designed to measure the production of industrial commodities in the mining, manufacturing, and electricity sectors in real terms (i.e. in terms of output, not sales value). The IPI is produced using the following data:

  • Monthly data on the production of crude oil and natural gas from PETRONAS.
  • Monthly production data for 245 selected industries in the manufacturing sector from the Monthly Manufacturing Survey, which covers establishments with significant sales.
  • Monthly data on the production of crude palm oil, refined palm kernel oil and palm kernel oil from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).
  • Monthly data on the generation of electricity from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. (SESB) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).

For a full description of the methodology, please refer to the Technical Notes.

What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?

Seasonally adjusted data (for all items) and data for items in the electricity section (D, 35101 to 35303) is not provided at 5 digit granularity. Furthermore:

  • Although the mining section (B) contains 56 items, only data for crude oil and natural gas (06101 and 06201) is provided here, because computation of the IPI does not include the other items.
  • The manufacturing section (C) contains 259 items. However, only data for 130 items (representing ~91% of the weightage of the manufacturing section) is provided. This means that higher-level indices (e.g. overall IPI) cannot be derived from this 5 digit dataset.
  • Data for items 11010, 11020 and 11030 are subsumed under item 11010; data for items 24201, 24202 and 24209 are subsumed under item 24201. This is due to a high margin of error when those items are disaggregated.
