Annual number of deaths of infants less than 28 days old (not including stillbirths), by state.

A neonatal death refers to the death of an infant less than 28 days old, not including stillbirths. In short, this data is a subset of the data on deaths. The 'state' reported in this dataset is based on the place of usual residence of the mother of the deceased, not the geographical location in which the deceased passed away. For example, if a neonatal death occurs at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur but the mother of the deceased resides in Selangor, it will be recorded as a neonatal death for Selangor. For a deeper understanding of the methodology and associated definition, please refer to the Technical Notes.
This data is derived based on deaths registered with JPN. Therefore, if a neonatal death is not registered with JPN (for instance, if the neonatal death of a foreigner is registered in their home country, or the neonatal death of citizen in a remote area is not registered), it will generally not count in this dataset. However, adjustment has been made to the number of deaths in Sabah to account for the under-reporting of deaths detected based on the 'Study of Under Reporting of Deaths in Sabah', which was conducted by DOSM and approved by the Steering Committee on Implementation of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics in 2016.
OpenDOSM features a dashboard on Population & Vital Statistics where you can explore this data in a more interactive manner!
