How is this data produced?
In Malaysia, there are two parallel systems for marriage registration; non-Muslim marriages are registered with the National Registration Department (JPN), while Muslim marriages are registered with the Syariah Court. This dataset is tabulated from the transactional administrative data collected by both administrative systems. Classification by state is based on the state of residence of the bride and groom respectively, meaning that the total number of male and female marriages in a state does not necessarily have to be the same (however, the national totals must match).
What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?
The data represents registered marriages only. Unregistered marriages (including couples originally registered outside Malaysia who have not yet registered their marriage with local authorities) are not included in this dataset.
