Permanent Reserved Forests (PRFs) are government lands that have been gazetted under the National Forestry Act 1984. Under the National Forestry Policy 1978 (Amendment 1992), PRFs must be managed and classified under four main functions: protection, production, recreation, and research. This dataset records the area of land gazetted as PRFs in Malaysia, with the area is calculated directly from the gazetted PRF maps. For a richer understanding of the definition and purposes of PRFs, please refer to this policy document.
Data prior to 2017 for states in Peninsular Malaysia includes the area of included proposed PRFs which had not yet been gazetted. Data from 2017 is based only on the area of gazetted PRFs. Furthermore, data on PRFs in Sarawak for 2010 and 2011 is not available at present and will be updated at a later date.
