How is this data produced?
This dataset presents the weekly retail price of RON95 petrol, RON97 petrol, and diesel in Malaysia. Since April 2017, the retail price of fuel in Malaysia has been set on a weekly basis (except for a short period at the end of 2018 where it was announced monthly) using the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM). Prior to that, it changed at a monthly (or longer) frequency. The APM is designed to allow the government to monitor the effects of changes in global crude oil prices and adjust retail fuel prices to ensure the continued welfare of the rakyat.
What caveats I should bear in mind when using this data?
Beginning 3 March 2021, the announcement of fuel prices was changed from Fridays to Wednesdays. Furthermore, because petrol and diesel prices are controlled by the government, they were not affected in the same way as non-price controlled items by the zero-rating of GST on 1 June 2018, and the subsequent implementation of SST 1 September 2018.
